Buffalo Grove police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:23 p.m. Thursday April 12, 2018 to a report of a home invasion and an assault at a home in the block of 400 St Mary’s Parkway. The 51 year-old female assault victim escaped her home and got help from a neighbor. Police responded to the victim’s home, and paramedics responded to the neighbor’s home where the victim sought safety from the home invasion. The offender was described as a female/black, heavyset, wearing a tank top shirt, pants (not described), and blue slippers.

Police said that at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday, the victim defended herself from the offender, and escaped her own home and then called police. Buffalo Grove police found the home invasion suspect in the female victim’s home, and arrested the female suspect by about 4:35 p.m. Police reported there were two injured people — the victim and the offender. A second ambulance from Arlington Heights was immediately dispatched to the scene. Both the female suspect and the female victim were transported to Northwest Community Hospital by Buffalo Grove Fire Department firefighter/paramedics and Arlington Heights firefighter/paramedics. The female victim was released from the hospital, while the female suspect remained in the hospital for a longer period while under observation.

The female suspect was identified as Justice Murphy, age 21, of Sauk Village, and was charged with home invasion, aggravated battery, and damage to property, according to Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Apparently, Justice Murphy and the female victim did not know each other. It was not initially confirmed whether the suspect had any connection to the Buffalo Grove neighborhood near St Mary’s Parkway and Lincoln Terrace, just south of Lake Cook Road between Weidner Road and Raupp Boulevard. St Mary’s Parkway was temporarily closed Thursday evening while the police and paramedic activity was underway between Lincoln Terrace and Hiawatha Drive.

Home Invasion Suspect Found, Arrested Near Scene of Crime in Wheeling

Wheeling police responded Sunday May 13, 2018 to a residence in Wheeling and brandished a knife at female resident. A woman who prosecutors say is more than 85 years-old, and her daughter, who is more than 60 years-old, were sitting in the family room of their home when an unknown male offender, wearing an orange shirt appeared at their unlocked screen door.

The offender entered the home unsteadily, and knocked over several photographs that were hanging on the wall as he staggered inside the residence, according to Cook County assistant state’s attorney Jennifer Gates.

“Brandishing a butcher-style knife, the offender approached the younger woman, who jumped off the couch, as he ran through the room to a bench below a picture window.

The stranger kept repeating “they are going to kill me” as the women yelled at him to leave, according to the Cook County assistant state’s attorney.

The offender raised the knife toward the elder woman, while her daughter attempted to call 911. When the phone did not work, the daughter picked up her mother’s walker and struck the intruder with it.

The offender fled, but Wheeling police say they found the intruder sitting in a vehicle, armed with the knife, according to Cook County assistant state’s attorney Jennifer Gates. The offender dropped the knife after police ordered him to drop the knife. However, during his arrest, he “attempted to defeat the arrest” by locking his arms when police tried to handcuff him.

Police identified the suspect as Gregorio Salgado, age 44, of Hanover Park. Police also recovered 1.6 grams of a substance that tested positive for cocaine, which was possessed by Salgado on the scene.

Gregorio Salgado, 44, was charged Sunday with home invasion, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. If convicted of the most serious crime, he faces up to 30 years in prison. Salgado is scheduled to appear in court on June 7, 2018.

According to criminal records, Salgado has a 2013 aggravated battery conviction and convictions for felony drug possession from 2012 and 1998.

No bond information or jail detainee information was available on the Cook County Sheriff’s official website. This report has incomplete information available about the arrestee and the crime scene neighborhood.

Woman Injured in Possible Home Invasion on Park Rd Near Cedar Lake Rd in Round Lake

Round Lake police responded about 2:01 AM Monday July 30, 2018 to a report that a female victim was punched in a possible home invasion at a house on Park Road just east of the intersection of Park Road and Cedar Lake Road in Round Lake, Illinois. Police received a report that a man entered a room inside the house, and punched a female resident at the house. The woman escaped while bleeding to a neighbor’s house and called 9-1-1.

Police arrived and immediately discovered the female victim at a neighbor’s house. Firefighter/paramedics were dispatched near the scene for an injured female battery victim about 2:03 a.m. The injured female victim was transported to a nearby hospital.

Park Road was blocked off east of Cedar Lake Road as soon as police arrived. Cedar Lake Road was also blocked a few minutes later.

With police surrounding the house, a woman came out of the victim’s house about 3:00 a.m. with her hands up. This was after police ordered people to come out of the house with their hands up when they saw a door close shut at the house. The police had surrounded the house with rifles aimed at the house. A woman wearing a black dress apparently had gone back into the house after the home invasion to get her purse. She was safely evacuated from the house, but initially police had to confirm she wasn’t a suspect, and they had her turn around and drop to her knees before the situation was secured. It was very dark in the neighborhood at 3:00 a.m. and the police initially did not know whether the offender was in the house, in the neighborhood, or long gone from the area.

As the woman in the black dress came out of the house with her hands up, she asked “What happened?” She also told police “Nice person and everything lives there!” She apparently was unaware why police were surrounding the house. The woman apparently did not realize there had been a report of a home invasion or why police were pointing guns at the house. A woman outside the house asked the woman in the black dress why she went back in the house. The woman in the black dress answered, “My purse was in there.”

This case is developing, and there is no information yet released from police regarding whether a suspect was captured or is at large. Round Lake police are investigating what happened.

Arlington Heights Gym Trainer Jailed Without Bail for Criminal Sexual Assault, Home Invasion in Evanston

$

The owner and operator of an Evanston kickboxing-themed fitness studio franchise “9 ROUND FITNESS” at 1706 Central Street in Evanston has been ordered held in Cook County jail without bail for almost two months after his arrest on charges of criminal sexual assault, home invasion and other charges in November 2018. The suspect, Kenneth Battinus, also worked as a fitness trainer at the Arlington Heights “9 ROUND FITNESS” location at 15 South Dunton Avenue, and at a newer location at 7 South Evergreen Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Evanston firefighters were on the scene of a minor fire in the laundry room of an apartment building in the block of 1400 Chicago Avenue about 9:15 p.m. Sunday November 11, 2018. A woman emerged from the apartment building, approached the firefighters, and said that a man had just forced his way into her apartment and sexually assaulted her.

The 34-year-old female resident of the apartment building identified a male suspect as her attacker as he was attempting to leave the scene.

Firefighters, who were outside the apartment building, had heard her shouting for help through an open window. Later, at least one firefighter grabbed the suspect as he tried to leave, according to Evanston police. The female victim said she was able to push the male suspect into a television, and run out of her apartment unit. Fire department personnel detained the male suspect until Evanston police officers arrived.

The female victim reported to police that she heard fire alarms sounding in her building and had opened the door to her apartment to evacuate. While her door was open, she said she was confronted by the suspect. She told police he forced his way into her apartment and pulled down his pants.

The female victim said the suspect tried to remove her pants and sexually assaulted her as they struggled in her apartment before she escaped.

The suspect on the scene was identified as Kenneth A. Battinus, age 41, a resident at 902 West Greenwood Street in Evanston — another apartment building located about three blocks west of the fire scene and crime scene.

Kenneth Battinus was arrested at 1400 Chicago Avenue in Evanston at 9:54 p.m. Sunday November 11, 2018, and was initially charged with criminal sexual assault.

Following a thorough investigation, Kenneth Battinus has been charged with 16 criminal counts.

Home Invasion/Sex Offense (2 counts)
Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault/Bodily Harm (2 counts)
Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault Felony (4 counts)
Criminal Sexual Assault/Force (2 counts)
Residential Burglary (3 counts)
Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (2 counts)
Criminal Sexual Abuse/Force (1 count)

Battinus has been incarcerated at Cook County Jail since November 13, 2018, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office. The woman, who accused Battinus of sexual assault said she had previously seen him in the area, but was not acquainted with Battinus.

Ken Battinus Veterans Day Tweet

Ken Battinus Veterans Day Tweet.

Hours before the alleged attack on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2018, @9RoundEvanston posted a tweet that connected a 9 ROUND FITNESS business promotion to an image of Battinus in his military uniform. The tweet said “IN honor of Veteran’s Day, Our 9Round Evanston Owner/Operator Ken Batinus invites you to get 2 mnth of unlimited training, no class times, and a personal trainer. All for the price of 1 month. Purchase equipment for $25 (value $60).”

The Evanston 9 ROUND FITNESS location was opened about 3.5 years after the Arlington Heights location for 9 ROUND FITNESS, which initially opened at 15 South Dunton Avenue in Arlington Heights on September 12, 2012. The Arlington Heights business (Twitter.com/9RChicagoland) moved to 7 South Evergreen Avenue in 2018.

Evanston police investigators believe the incident was a crime of opportunity and police say that the female resident had not been specifically targeted. Police officers on the scene reported Battinus appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. The next court date for Kenneth Battinus is February 6, 2019 at Cook County Circuit Court in Skokie.

According to the 9 ROUND FITNESS application for a special use permit on Central Street in Evanston, Kenneth Battinus is the co-lessee of the location with relatives Jeff Battinus and Jim Battinus.

Jeff Battinus is well-known in the northwest suburban community, previously serving as a board member with Wheeling Township and School District 21.
